"Fallen" is an entrancing novel, one that found me unable to put it down until I reached the end, eager to get to the resolution to find out exactly what Daniel Grigori's secret was.
Lauren Kate just touched on the good stuff, before leaving us hanging for book two, "Torment" which doesn't arrive until September 2010. Talk about a cliffhanger!
Sword & Cross is a boarding school for delinquent juveniles, a place that Lucinda "Luce" Price is sent to after a mysterious fire takes the life of Trevor, Luce's love interest at Dover Prep, for which she was targeted as the main suspect.
She fast makes friends with Arriane, a seemingly psychotic long-time student of Sword and Cross, and Penn, the only normal student there and daughter of the deceased groundskeeper.
Enter Cam and Daniel.
Cam comes off as the nice guy - the sweet, romantic, all-his-thoughts-are-about-you kind of guy. He's always trying to woo Luce, taking her on picnic dates in the cemetery, inviting her to parties, etc. She finds herself attracted to him, and thinks she could do worse, so doesn't see the harm in flirting back.
But then there's Daniel. Dark and mysterious, hot-and-cold Daniel. The more Luce tries to discover about him - his life before Sword & Cross - the less she seems to find, and yet at the same time she can't help but feel this unexplainable attraction to him. She feels as if she knows him from somewhere, but can't really place him. He's so hot and cold with her, she can't tell where he's coming from most of the time. But as much as he tries to keep away from her, to push her away, the more he's around her, saving her from unpleasant situations.
A few other minor characters make their appearances, the usual high school stereotype figures; the bitch, the flirt, the wingman, the outcast...all of whom seem as though they're insignificant to the telling of the story, however the end begins to reveal that there may be a little more to them than meets the eye.
This novel is aimed more at a teenage audience, but when it comes to fantasy, I'll read almost anything! LOL. Lauren Kate has a knack for drawing her audience in with her writing style and tale of forbidden romance, and the world she has created with her characters has left me craving more...
