Okay, so it took me about 5 years of urging and a friend to actually buy me a copy of this book for me to stop procrastinating and read it. It's not that I didn't want to read it, I just always forgot to look it up in the library when I went, or I forgot to borrow it from my friend... And now I'm kind of kicking myself for not reading it sooner!
I'm really quite thrilled to announce that Alice Sebold's emotional and heart-wrenching story that follows the grief and battles of the Salmon family takes the #1 place in the IvyandLime novel list for 2010. I couldn't imagine a better book to start off the new decade!
I know I didn't really beat the movie with this novel choice, but I was determined that I would read the book before seeing the movie. And considering I've had this book on my To-Read list for 5 years now, it's amazing that I actually achieved that goal! I've not yet seen the film, but I will make sure to see it on the big screen before it's too late! =)
For those of you who haven't heard of "The Lovely Bones," first of all - CLIMB OUT FROM UNDER THAT ROCK! Secondly, I would highly reccommend you find yourself a copy. Make yourself a few snacks, a large mug of hot chocolate (or if it's warm out, a large glass of lemonade), then proceed to find yourself a nice comfortable spot where you won't be disturbed, because trust me, this is one book you won't want to put down!
From the moment you start reading, Alice Sebold has you hooked, the emotion and suspense making you crave more. Her crafty way of revealing the murder and the murderer in the first chapter, but filling out the remainder of the story with the mystery and grief of the horrific event that follow Susie's friends and family is highly effective, and the ending will definitely leave you torn.
It's got emotion, it's got suspense, it's got romance, it's got a gruesome murder, and it's told from the perspective of a dead girl in her version of heaven. What more could you want?
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars.
